Newsletter - Autumn Term 2017

Just a note to share some information for Autumn term.

Firstly, term dates: Monday 11th September to Saturday 17th December with half term taken w/c 23rd October. There are no classes during half term.

New classes/teachers: We have two new teachers joining us this September:-

  • Helen Johnson joins us as our singing teacher. I am sure many of you will already know Helen from her work with local schools and other organisations as well as the private tuition she provides for piano and singing. Group singing lessons will be on some Saturdays (see timetable for times) on: Saturdays 23rd September, 7th & 21st October, 18th November and 2nd December.

The children will be working on technique, voice production, diction and learning age appropriate musical theatre style songs. After half term they will be learning some Christmas songs too. The sessions will be divided into Junior (5-10) and Inter/Senior (11 and above).

  • Michelle Hood also join us on a Saturday. She will be teaching Born to Dance, Preschool, Preparatory ballet and Junior Freestyle.

  • Abbie O’Brien takes over Laura Murphy’s classes on a Tuesday.

Please ensure your child has the correct uniform for their classes. If in doubt, please ask for a uniform list. There are a few changes in uniform mainly following student requests. Grade 3 (and above) ballet now wear black camisole ballet leotards. Grade 3 (and above) modern jazz wear black camisole catsuits (see list for type) and Grade 2 tap may wear either black camisole leotard or mulberry leotard with black jazz pants. If renewing jazz shoes and tap shoes, please get tan/nude. These are available from Adage in Harrogate – they have a list of the styles that are acceptable.

Please also ensure your child comes to class with tidy hair, preferably in a bun. Children with hair in their eyes fidget constantly and ponytails ‘whip’ the face and affect balance when turning.

At half term, Miss Abbie and I are going to Liverpool for a two-day Acrobatic Arts course. The lines between gymnastics and dance are increasingly blurred and we want to respond to this by providing Acro’ classes at RDA. More details to follow. We will be fund-raising to purchase crash mats and teaching aids for the class. If you think you could help with fundraising, please see me with your ideas!

This term show group are competing at two dance festivals and all grade classes will be learning syllabus work. We will be having an exam session at the beginning of December – date to be confirmed. Looking forward to a busy term ahead!
